Helping you regain control of your life

Ruth Hawker, Psychotherapist and Hypnotherapist
Counsel Cert, D.M.H, D.Hyp, CPNLP, EMDR, Dip SMC, BSc Psy (Open)

I have a passion for helping people using therapeutic tools and hypnosis. I have worked with clients (including referrals from GP Practices) to make positive life changes. Learning about the human mind has given me the knowledge and skill to help others. I understand how hard it can be to make changes without support.

My approach is always centred on the belief that my clients have a solution somewhere within themselves, and it is my role to help locate this solution and work towards making it a reality.

Accredited training and qualifications:
Psychology, Counselling, Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy. Training includes diplomas in specialist hypnotherapy treatments.

Memberships:
British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

Counselling & Psychotherapy

Feeling stuck in life can be distressing and overwhelming. Sometimes we can feel helpless, not knowing how to move forward. This is where counselling or psychotherapy can help. Counselling can help you to explore your feelings and look at the reasons why you are feeling this way. Counselling aims to help you find your own solutions, without making moral judgements or pushing you in a particular direction.

MORE ABOUT COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a state of relaxed awareness, being physically relaxed but mentally alert and in full control throughout. In this state, the subconscious mind is most receptive to hypnotic suggestion. The relaxed state is similar to being completely absorbed in a movie, music, book, or absorbed in own thoughts or meditations. In this state, natural internal resources can be used to help make changes or regain control.

MORE ABOUT HYPNOTHERAPY

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a unique, nontraditional form of psychotherapy designed to diminish negative feelings associated with memories of traumatic events and to help people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). People who have PTSD may experience intrusive thoughts, memories, nightmares or flashbacks of traumatic events in their past.

MORE ABOUT EMDR

During the session

During the session, you will begin by talking about what you hope to achieve. It is likely that you will be asked about your about your life, including your habits and feelings, to try and establish what may have lead to your difficulty.

You will receive and explanation about how the therapy or combination of therapies; counselling, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and EMDR, will work, going through the process with you so you feel comfortable and know exactly what to expect. It is important to ask any questions you have that have not been covered. You should feel comfortable and happy with the process before moving forward.

Once you are happy with the process, your treatment will begin. You may be guided into a highly relaxed, trance-like state, in order to communicate with your unconscious. You will not be asleep, but fully aware of what is happening and you will be in control at all times. Suggestive statements, questions and ideas may be used to challenge your emotional dependence and behaviours, taking your past into consideration for your well-being and emotional state.
